Typeform vs Tally: which form builder should you pay for?

Typeform and Tally solve the same problem from opposite ends. Typeform sells polish and charges by response volume and seats. Tally gives away almost everything for free and charges for branding, custom domains and team features.

Below: both price lists with links to the vendors' own pages, a feature table where every cell cites its source, and a short verdict. We make MangoForm, a form builder you pay for once, so it appears as a third column; we've kept it out of the Typeform and Tally columns.

Pick Typeform if

  • You need Stripe payments inside a form and a long list of native integrations
  • Your monthly volume fits comfortably under the response cap of the plan you buy
  • You want AI-assisted form creation and response enrichment on the higher plans
  • Your company needs SSO, HIPAA or a choice of US or EU data center (Enterprise)

Pick Tally if

  • You want unlimited forms and submissions without paying anything
  • You collect payments, signatures or file uploads and want them on a free plan
  • Your team needs many collaborators: Pro includes unlimited team members
  • You'd rather keep form data in Europe with an EU-based vendor

Typeform and Tally, side by side

Each cell links to the vendor's own page it comes from. The last column is MangoForm, limited to features it has today.

The verdict

Pick Typeform if you need Stripe payments, a deep integration catalog or enterprise compliance, and your monthly volume fits the response cap you pay for. Pick Tally if you want the most generous free tier of the two: unlimited submissions with payments, signatures and uploads included, and Pro only when you need your own branding, domain or a larger team. Consider MangoForm if you want to pay once: MangoForm costs $25 one time and has no response cap, skip logic and custom branding, but it can't take payments, accept files or email you on each submission.

The math over 1, 3 and 5 years

Each tool's cheapest paid plan at its yearly-billing rate: Typeform Basic at $28 a month and Tally Pro at $290 a year. They don't buy the same thing. Basic still shows Typeform branding and stops at 100 responses a month; Tally Pro removes branding with no response cap. Matching Pro on branding would put Typeform at Plus, $56 a month.

Where MangoForm falls short

No payments, uploads or signatures

Both Typeform and Tally can take a payment or a file inside a form, and Tally also collects signatures. MangoForm does none of these today, so order forms, job applications with a CV or signed agreements belong elsewhere.

No free plan and no email alerts

Tally's free tier costs nothing, which no one-time price can beat. MangoForm also doesn't send you an email when a response arrives: you read results in the dashboard or forward them with a webhook.

Smaller and simpler

MangoForm has no custom domains, no partial submissions and no compliance certifications. It is built and supported by one founder, so think twice before putting it at the center of a regulated workflow.

Two pricing models, two kinds of surprise bill

Typeform meters usage. Every plan includes a fixed number of responses per month and a fixed number of users, so the bill tracks how successful your forms are. A campaign that brings in 300 answers in a month already needs Plus, because Basic includes 100. The FAQ on the pricing page says that over 50,000 responses a month means a custom plan through sales.

Tally meters features instead. The free plan has no response cap, only a fair-use policy that asks heavy users (around 50,000 submissions a month, several months in a row) to talk about a tailored plan. What you pay for on Pro is presentation and teamwork: no Tally branding, a custom domain, unlimited collaborators, custom CSS, partial submissions and drop-off analytics.

In practice, a Typeform bill rises when your audience grows, and a Tally bill appears when your brand matters. Ask which of those two things is more likely to happen to you this year.

What a year costs at each step

On yearly billing, Typeform runs $336 a year for Basic, $672 for Plus and $1,092 for Business. Paying month to month costs more: $39, $79 and $129. Tally Pro is $290 a year or $29 a month, and Business is $890 a year or $89 a month.

The like-for-like comparison is Typeform Plus against Tally Pro, since both remove branding and allow a team. That gap is $672 against $290 a year, before counting that Plus stops at 1,000 responses a month and 3 users while Tally Pro has neither limit.

Where MangoForm fits

If you came here because both bills look too high for the forms you actually run, MangoForm is the pay-once option: one-question-at-a-time forms with a progress bar, around 20 question types, skip logic, your own colors, fonts, logo and CSS, password protection, embeds, CSV export and webhooks. There is no limit on forms or responses.

It is a narrower tool than either Typeform or Tally. Read the column above before buying: anything marked not available is something you would give up.

FAQ

Is Tally really free?

Yes. Tally's pricing page lists unlimited forms and submissions on the free plan, along with payments, signatures, file uploads up to 10 MB per file and logic, subject to a fair-use policy for very high volumes.

Which is cheaper, Typeform or Tally?

Tally, at every level we compared. Its free plan covers what Typeform charges for on Basic, and Tally Pro at $290 a year costs less than Typeform Basic at $336 a year while removing branding.

What happens when I go over Typeform's response limit?

Each Typeform plan includes a set number of responses a month, and the pricing page points you to upgrading when you need more. If you downgrade or your plan ends, it says your forms may close to new responses; existing forms and answers are kept.

Can I take payments with Typeform or Tally?

Both can. Typeform uses payment questions connected to Stripe, and Tally lists payments on its free plan. MangoForm can't take payments, so it isn't a fit for order forms.

Is there a one-time payment option instead of a subscription?

MangoForm is one: $25 once, or included in the $49 F*ckSubscription bundle with our other apps. It suits surveys, feedback and lead forms, not payments or file collection.
