A Uniqode alternative you pay for once

Uniqode is a serious product for companies. Its cheapest paid plan, Essential, is $9 a month billed yearly and includes 15 dynamic QR codes. Its FAQ says that when a trial ends or a subscription is cancelled, your dynamic codes become inactive. If you have printed codes out in the world, that sentence is the whole reason this page exists.

LimeQR does one narrow job. It makes dynamic QR codes that point to a short link, lets you change the destination later, and counts scans. It costs $19 once for 100 codes, or $39 once for 1,000 codes. Below are Uniqode's prices as written on its own pages today, the arithmetic, and a frank list of what Uniqode does that LimeQR does not. If you need those things, stay with Uniqode.

LimeQR is a good fit if

  • You print dynamic QR codes on flyers, menus, packaging or signs and want them to keep redirecting without a yearly renewal
  • You are one person or a small shop, and 100 or 1,000 codes is plenty
  • You pay for Uniqode mainly to edit destinations after printing and to see how many people scanned
  • You would rather pay once than keep a subscription alive just so old printed codes still work

Stay on Uniqode if

  • You need several people editing the same account, single sign-on, or a compliance story such as SOC 2 or HIPAA
  • You need an API, retargeting, GPS tracking or integrations with a CRM
  • You rely on landing pages, forms, editable digital business cards or dynamic QR types beyond a plain link (LimeQR's free tools make static vCard codes, which cannot be edited or tracked)
  • Your company already has a Uniqode contract and a procurement process that expects a vendor of that size

The math over 1, 3 and 5 years

LimeQR Solo includes 100 codes, and Essential stops at 15, so Core (250 codes, $49 a month billed yearly, $588 a year) is the cheapest Uniqode plan that holds the same number of codes. If you only ever need 15 codes or fewer, Essential at $108 a year is the fair comparison, and LimeQR Solo ($19 once) pays for itself within the first year of that plan too.

What LimeQR does

Only features that exist in LimeQR today. If it isn't in this table, assume we don't have it.

FeatureLimeQRUniqode
Dynamic QR codes that encode a short link on the LimeQR domain; the owner can change the destination any time and the next scan follows (302, never cached)IncludedYes, on every paid plan: 15 codes on Essential, 250 on Core, 500 on Plus, 2,000 on Business+
A static QR that encodes the destination directly, downloadable from every code page: it works without LimeQR, but it cannot be edited and its scans are not countedIncludedYes, free; Uniqode's FAQ says there is no limit on static QR code creation
Scan counts per day, country and device type (mobile, tablet, desktop) for the last 30 days, stored as daily totals only: no IP address or user agent is kept; link previews and bots are not countedIncludedAnalytics history of 60 days on Essential, 90 on Core, 180 on Plus and lifetime on Business+; advanced analytics and GPS tracking from Core
Create codes in bulk from a CSV (destination, optional custom address and name): up to 100 rows per import on Solo, 500 on Pro, with a ZIP of the QR codes as SVGIncludedBulk creation is listed on every paid plan, starting with Essential
QR design: code and background colors (contrast of 3:1 or more enforced), square, rounded or dot modules, square or rounded corner eyes, a PNG/JPEG/WebP logo in the center, an optional box or banner frame with up to 24 characters of textIncludedBasic customizations on Essential, advanced customizations from Core
Export every code with its short link and destination as CSV, also available without an active planIncludedNot listed on Uniqode's pricing page
Downloads as SVG and as PNG at 1024 or 2048 pxIncludedNot listed on Uniqode's pricing page
Custom domains: the owner connects a hostname they control (CNAME + a TXT record proving control); codes then work on https://<their domain>/<code> and their QR codes can encode it. Solo 1 domain, Pro 5. If they leave, they can point that domain elsewhereIncludedAdd-on on the Plus plan, $2000 per domain per year according to Uniqode's FAQ

Where Uniqode is better

Teams, seats and sign-in controls

Uniqode lists one seat on Essential and Core, three on Plus and five on Business+, with single sign-on on Business+ and extra seats as add-ons. LimeQR is built for one person. If several colleagues need to edit the same codes, or your IT department asks for single sign-on, Uniqode is the right tool.

Security and compliance

Uniqode's site lists SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR and ISO badges, two-factor authentication and single sign-on. I am one person building simple apps and I cannot show you any of those certifications. If your company needs them on paper, that settles the question.

Integrations, API, retargeting and GPS tracking

From the Core plan Uniqode lists integrations, a QR code API, advanced analytics and GPS tracking, and Business+ adds retargeting. LimeQR has none of these. It counts scans per day, country and device, and that is where it stops.

Landing pages, forms and many QR types

Uniqode lists 15+ QR code types, Linkpages for multi-link pages, and QR code forms that collect responses. LimeQR's dynamic (editable, tracked) codes only point to a web address; its free tools add static vCard, Wi-Fi, WhatsApp and Google review codes that can't be changed or counted. A menu page, a contact form or an editable business card is outside what it does.

What Uniqode's own pages say about prices

Uniqode's pricing page shows four self-serve QR code plans with prices per month, billed yearly: Essential $9, Core $49, Plus $99 and Business+ $399, plus an Enterprise plan with custom pricing. Dynamic codes are what the plans unlock: 15, 250, 500 and 2,000 respectively. Static codes are free.

I could not find a monthly price. The pricing FAQ answers the question "Do you offer monthly plans?" with "We currently only offer annual subscription plans." Uniqode's help center says plans are billed annually by default and suggests asking support if you want monthly billing. So the figures above are yearly commitments shown as a monthly rate: Essential is $108 a year, Core is $588, Plus is $1,188 and Business+ is $4,788.

What happens to your dynamic codes when you cancel

This is the part to read before you print anything. On its pricing page, under "What happens to my dynamic QR Codes once the free trial expires?", Uniqode writes: "Once your free trial expires, any dynamic QR Codes you created will become inactive. To keep them active and accessible, you'll need to upgrade to a paid plan. If you don't upgrade, the QR Codes will no longer redirect users, and any tracking or analytics associated with them will be paused until a subscription is activated."

For cancelling a paid plan, the same page says: "If you decide to cancel your subscription, your QR Codes will become inactive. We recommend disabling auto-renewal to avoid unexpected charges and continue using the QR Code services until your current billing cycle ends." Another answer on that page is shorter: "For your QR Codes to work, the account linked to them has to stay active." Static codes keep working, because they contain the destination itself, but Uniqode says you will no longer be able to access the account.

I am only reporting what those pages say. That is a normal subscription model, and it is fair for a company that pays to run redirect servers for you. It does mean a printed dynamic code is only as alive as your subscription.

Scan limits are yearly and a hard stop

Uniqode's pricing cards do not show scan caps, but its help center article "Is there a scan limit on my QR Code?" does. It lists annual limits of 50,000 scans on Essential, 1,000,000 on Core and 2,000,000 on Plus, and says: "If you exceed the QR Code scan limit, your QR Codes will become inactive." The pricing FAQ adds that scan limits are reset annually, and that going over means upgrading to a higher plan.

LimeQR handles that case differently. Solo counts up to 10,000 tracked scans a month and Pro counts up to 100,000. Above that, the codes keep redirecting and only the counting pauses until the next month. Nobody scanning a flyer should hit a dead end because a counter filled up.

What a one-time price does and does not promise

LimeQR Solo is $19 once for 100 codes, and Pro is $39 once for 1,000 codes. I will not tell you the codes last forever. Lifetime here means for as long as I run the app. If I ever shut it down, you get 30 days' notice and an export of your codes. You can also download a static version of any code, which works without LimeQR but cannot be edited and does not count scans.

You also get a 14-day full refund. If you try LimeQR and Uniqode suits you better, you lose nothing.

FAQ

Does Uniqode offer monthly billing?

Its pricing FAQ says "We currently only offer annual subscription plans." The help center says plans are billed annually by default and that you can ask support about monthly billing. The monthly figures on the pricing page are yearly plans shown per month.

What happens to my Uniqode dynamic QR codes if I cancel?

Uniqode's pricing FAQ says that if you cancel, "your QR Codes will become inactive," and that you can keep using them until your current billing cycle ends. After a trial ends it says dynamic codes stop redirecting users until you upgrade to a paid plan.

How many dynamic QR codes does each Uniqode plan include?

Essential has 15, Core has 250, Plus has 500 and Business+ has 2,000, according to the pricing page. LimeQR Solo includes 100 codes and Pro includes 1,000, each for a single payment.

Can I use my own domain with LimeQR like I can with Uniqode?

Yes. You connect a hostname you control with a CNAME and a TXT record, and codes then work on that domain. Solo includes 1 domain and Pro includes 5, with no yearly fee on top. Uniqode's FAQ describes a custom domain as a Plus plan add-on priced at $2000 per domain per year. By default the short link sits on the LimeQR domain.

Does LimeQR stop redirecting if I exceed my scan count?

No. Above the monthly tracked scans of your plan (10,000 on Solo, 100,000 on Pro), codes keep redirecting and only counting pauses until the next month. Uniqode's help center says that going over a plan's scan limit makes codes inactive.

Should a company with several users switch from Uniqode to LimeQR?

Probably not. LimeQR is built for one person and does not offer shared accounts or single sign-on. A solo owner or small shop with printed codes is the good fit.
